Battery issues with Nano? From Korea

Following hard on the heels of rumours / early reports of overheating issues with the recently released iPhone 3GS comes a report of overheating associated with the battery on the iPod Nano (JoongAng Daily).

The Korean Agency for Technology and Standards has, apparently sent two formal requests to Apple Korea with regard to its concerns regarding overheating issues. Complaints include reports that the Nano either melted, expanded or exploded while being recharged. On the basis of these reports, the issue may be related to the lithium ion battery pack made by the Chinese company ATL. There have been a total of 5 consumer complaints since December/08 and June/09.

While the lithium ion battery pack has the advantage of being light and compact, concerns regarding the use of the iPod Nano for extended periods of time have been raised previously. Similar complaints were reported from Japan last year.

Apple Korea has made no definitive decision regarding the issue, however, it has, reportedly, posted a notice on its homepage stating that customers should visit Apple aftermarket branches in the event they have a problem associated with their iPod batteries.
